When it comes to training, realizing what you DON'T know is the key to success.
You don't know how much the people you are training already know. You don't know how fast everyone being trained will learn. It helps to to start from the perspective of someone outside the organization. At Chapter & Verse, we know that getting knowlede and/or information out of your content experts' heads and transforming it into performance-based training that's motivating and effective can take some careful planning.
E-Learning has harnessed technology in innovative ways, but without good instructional design, high tech bells and whistles are just a waste of time and resources. Different training gurus have different ideas, but they all agree on the importance of good design.
We like IT and E-Learning guru Ruth Colvin Clark's strategies to avoid cognitive overload. We favor designs that include less talk and turn key learning points into brief reference notes. We think instructors (whether human or electronic) should do less and have the learners do more. Rather than have huge amounts of material presented to trainees, the lessons should be broken up into more digestable portions and dispensed over time. Whenever possible, we like to design workbook pages and/or training screens in a way that spur the memory.
We're also big fans of Thiagi even though we have no idea how to properly prounounce his real name. (Sivasailam Thiagarajan-- try to say that real fast three times in a row!) We never try to over analyze stuff, re-invent the wheel, or encourage "inside the box" thinking. We agree that you should spend less time designing content and more time designing activities that will engage people to think and do. We also love his philosophy that you should keep repeating and refining your programs until you die.
At Chapter & Verse we subscribe to a simple philosophy--
there's no such thing as good writing, there is only good re-writing. Whatever high tech method you decide to use for delivering your final message, if you wish to succeed, you need to start with the basics and put pencil to paper.
In fact, we have clients who have their own digital media production staff and equipment who still have Chapter & Verse write for them. It's amazing how much you can save on your production costs when you have a budget-minded writer who's also an experienced producer and director. It's also surprising how much more effective your training can be when you have an "outsider" with a fresh perspective help with your instructional design. Of course we're also adept at putting pencil to paper and producing "low tech" materials like:
- Executive Speeches
- Brochure Copy
- Reports
- Sales & Marketing Materials
- Advertising Copy
- Press Releases
Of course you may be a pretty fair wordsmith yourself and just need a fresh eye to go over your copy with a red pencil and tweak things. Or you may be a complete novice who needs some heavy duty help. Either way, we're happy to assist you or your staff.
Chapter & Verse can help you create great Web sites.
If you already have a site that you're happy with, we can help you out by providing interesting, informative content that will keep visitors coming back.
If you need to start from scratch, we begin with a basic structure and some compelling copy. These days it doesn't hurt if your sight also contains some creative and engaging multimedia.
Best of all, you don't have to learn about HTML, CSS, Flash, JavaScript, AJAX, or PHP. We can wrestle it all onto the web for you.
We love writing for radio. It is an amazing medium that offers unlimited opportunities for creativity.
They dubbed this medium "Theater of the Mind" because it allows the listener to fill in so much rich detail using only their imagination. Do you think Orson Welles could have panicked the country with his War of the Worlds broadcast if he'd done it on live television? Sorry, but even the most sophisticated special effects are no substitute for the human imagination!
As a kid I met a DeeJay I listened to every morning, in-person for the first time. In my mind's eye this guy with the pleasant, friendly voice had always looked a lot different than the short overweight balding middle-aged man who shook my hand and showed me around the studio.
At Chapter & Verse we can help you find imaginative ways to harness the power of radio, and we can also provide those pleasant, friendly sounding voices.
